It’s Good To Know: Tea Party protests

I have been hearing about “tea parties” mushrooming all around US. What’s going on? Are (North)Americans suddenly going British?

I did some research and it seems that the Tea Party protests that have been happening all around the USA this April take their name from the Boston Tea Party.

To cut a long story short, the English Parliament gave the East India Company a monopoly on the importation of tea, taxing the hell out of consumers. Not surprisingly, smuggling tea from tax-free Dutch imports became the norm.To keep East India dominance of the market, the British Parliament refunded the taxes to the company but to to offset this loss of revenue, it levied new taxes, including one on tea, in the colonies.

The story takes the name from the angry British Americans who headed to Boston Harbor and dumped into the water the tea loaded in three vessels.

This kick started the revolution agains the British in the American colonies and eventually lead to independence. Ever since, any attempt to increase taxes or add new ones has been responded with Tea Parties around the country. Interestingly enough, this time around it seems to be the huge amount of debt the USA government is getting into that is giving rise to the new protests (given the future tax rises that inevitably the US government will have to do).

Let’s have some tea.
